Prayer of the Youth
on the occasion of the CBCP Year of the Youth

Almighty Father, God of life and love,
through time and ages, You love us.
You trust and choose us
to participate in Your saving work.

Bless us, Your young people,
with Your grace.
Give us the gift of living life to the full
by encountering Your Son
in a personal way
and sustaining a relationship with Him,
by learning what life truly is
from His words and works,
from His filial relationship with You,
And by living in true and fruitful
communion with You
and with one another.

Empower us through Your Holy Spirit
to stand firm in the faith.
May we bring our fellow young people
closer to You so that together,
we become agents of change
and builders of a society of justice and
solidarity, love and peace.

Enable all of us:
Your young people,
together with those ministering to us
in the Church, in families and in society,
to make a decisive response
to our universal vocation;
to live fully and fruitfully
by doing everything in love
as we follow Jesus Christ
along the path of genuine trust in You.

In communion with the rest of the Church,
we pray that this CBCP Year of the Youth
become a kairos time
for the youth ministry of Your Church
and a new springtime for us,
Filipino youth: a special period
of growing in Your grace
through our living in youthful holiness
and through our effort to reach out
as a Church to those waiting for Your love.

Together with our Blessed Mother,
our model in giving oneself
entirely to Your will,
we lift this prayer to You
in Jesus Christ, Your Son,
our Friend, Brother and Lord,
in the Power of the Holy Spirit,
now and forever. Amen.
Local WYD

HISTORY
of
LOCAL WORLD YOUTH DAY

To bring the spirit of the WYD to those who cannot attend the international youth celebration of World Youth Day(WYD), the archdiocese made its Local World Youth Day (LWYD). Since the start of the WYD celebrations in 1985, the archdiocese has faithfully observed its own LWYD. Hence, the 23rd WYD also coincides with the 23rd year of celebrating the LWYD.

The LWYD is intended to be a reflection of the WYD. Through the years, it indeed has mirrored the essentials of the WYD. The theme itself follows the year’s WYD theme. This diocesan event used to be celebrated at the archbishop’s palace grounds until it started journeying to different parishes in the archdiocese as well as in venues suitable for big gatherings. The biggest LWYD gathering so far was in 2006 where approximately 8,000 young people from the parishes in Cebu and from its neighboring dioceses attended the joint celebration of 21st LWYD and 1st Regional Youth Day of the Central-Eastern Visayas Regional Youth Coordinating Council.

The LWYD is considered the summit of all the COY programs as it puts into convergence the components of youth ministry which are evangelization, catechesis, fellowship, social action and leadership. The main events in the LWYD are the youth jam, catechetical lectures, immersion, youth forum and Taize prayer. Young people are also led to appreciate the Cebuano culture through a cultural night wherein the host parish showcases the best things of their city or municipality. Since the LWYD celebration ends during the Palm Sunday, Lenten activities are observed such as the Stations of the Cross and confessions during the Vigil with the Cardinal.

The highlight of the LWYD is the Dialogue with the Cardinal patterned after the Dialogue with the Pope. This is done during the Vigil with the Cardinal on the eve of Palm Sunday. This activity aims to shed light on the minds of young people on pressing and confusing issues affecting them. The Dialogue was started during the 19th LWYD celebrations in 2004. The Cardinal himself looks forward to this exchange of feelings and ideas with him and the youth.

After the Dialogue, the Cardinal delivers his Message to the Youth of Cebu based on the theme. This is his official address to the young people in the archdiocese for the current liturgical year.

The LWYD culminates with the Eucharistic Celebration and Blessing of Palms by the Cardinal. During the closing ceremony, the Cardinal announces the next host of the LWYD. The LWYD officially ends with the Turn-Over of the Youth Pilgrim Cross to the next host.
