Prayer of the Youth
on the occasion of the CBCP Year of the Youth

Almighty Father, God of life and love,
through time and ages, You love us.
You trust and choose us
to participate in Your saving work.

Bless us, Your young people,
with Your grace.
Give us the gift of living life to the full
by encountering Your Son
in a personal way
and sustaining a relationship with Him,
by learning what life truly is
from His words and works,
from His filial relationship with You,
And by living in true and fruitful
communion with You
and with one another.

Empower us through Your Holy Spirit
to stand firm in the faith.
May we bring our fellow young people
closer to You so that together,
we become agents of change
and builders of a society of justice and
solidarity, love and peace.

Enable all of us:
Your young people,
together with those ministering to us
in the Church, in families and in society,
to make a decisive response
to our universal vocation;
to live fully and fruitfully
by doing everything in love
as we follow Jesus Christ
along the path of genuine trust in You.

In communion with the rest of the Church,
we pray that this CBCP Year of the Youth
become a kairos time
for the youth ministry of Your Church
and a new springtime for us,
Filipino youth: a special period
of growing in Your grace
through our living in youthful holiness
and through our effort to reach out
as a Church to those waiting for Your love.

Together with our Blessed Mother,
our model in giving oneself
entirely to Your will,
we lift this prayer to You
in Jesus Christ, Your Son,
our Friend, Brother and Lord,
in the Power of the Holy Spirit,
now and forever. Amen.

Program of Activities

CATECHESIS

The parish youth spiritual director or a parish catechist is requested to conduct the catechesis in the life and martyrdom of Blessed Pedro Calungsod. He/she must refer to the book, "Pedro Calungsod, Prospects of a teenage Filipino" by Fr. Ildebrando Jesus Aliño Leyson. Copies of such are available at the Blessed Pedro Calungsod Shrine Office.

The following is an outline of the talk and reflection:

Filipino-Visayan roots
  • The historical context/setting of the Philippines during Pedro Calungsod's time
Missionary Life
  • The call to mission and his response
  • The challenges and difficulties he met before and during his arrival to the mission area in Guam
Martyrdom and Beatification
  • His death as a martyr
  • The cause of his beatification and canonization
Devotion
  • Lessons from his life especially the value of sacrifice and suffering
  • Values and virtues that the young people can learn from him
  • His relevance and connection to the present generation
  • Examples of true-to-life stories of graces received through the intercession of Blessed Pedro Calungsod
Notes:
  1. The catechist must not exceed 40 minutes to sustain the participants’ attention. The remaining minutes must be allotted for the open-forum on the talk.
  2. The parish may also invite a representative from the Special Commission for the Propagation and Development of the Devotion to Blessed Pedro Calungsod. In such cases, arrangements must be made weeks prior to the activity.

GROUP DYNAMICS

The participants must be divided appropriately depending on the number of facilitator assigned. A group of six to ten members will do.

Objectives:

  1. Understand the relevance of Blessed Pedro Calungsod to the present generation, and
  2. Foster friendship and bonding among the young people who are geographically close to each other, thus journey together with Blessed Pedro Calungsod.

  1. Opening Song/Prayer
The facilitators may assign any member of the group to lead the prayer. The prayer leader may also choose an opening song invoking God’s presence.
  2. UNfreezers
    Examples
    • aweather Massage ("ulan, bagyo, dalugdog, linog")
    • Break Claps
    • Toe-knee-Chest-Knows I Love You (Tune: London Bridge)

  3. Getting to Know You
The facilitator must think of a creative way for the members tointroduce themselves.
    Below is an example:
1 - "Ako si Melanie. I describe myself as "boutan."

    * The person beside him/her must introduce first the person/s preceding him/her (with the adjective) before introducing himself/herself.

2 - "Siya si Melanie nga buotan. Ako pud si Grace nga Gwapa. »
3 - « Siya si Melanie nga buotan, siya si Grace nga gwapa, ako si Abdul nga kugihan. »
    And so on.

The game continues until the last person has introduced himself.
  4. Reflection
The facilitator must clearly state the objectives of the sharing. He/She then briefly shares his/her own devotion to Blessed Pedro. He/She must review some important points from the catechesis with emphasis on the missionary aspect of the life of Beato Pedro.

The following are the guide questions for reflection:
    1. Asang bahina sa kinabuhi ni Beato Pedro imong nakita ang imong kaugalingon sa pagkakaron? Ngano man?
(What part of Blessed Pedro's life can you see your life as of now?)
    2. Unsa man ang imong matawag nga labing mahinungdanong pagtando sa usa ka tawag sa pagkasantos?
(What has been your most significant "yes" to a call to holiness?)

Allow a 1O-minute individual reflection. Then participants take turns sharing their insights to the questions. Allow some follow-up questions but be conscious of the time. After everyone has shared, express your reflection on Blessed Pedro Calungsod Then synthesize the responses shared.
  5. Ice-breaker
    (Hold hands)
Song: "One Friend" Show music player

I always thought you were the best
And I guess I always will
I always felt that we were blessed
And I feel that way still
Sometimes we took the hard road
But we always saw it through
If I had only one friend left
I'd want it to be you

Sometimes the world was on our side
    Sometimes it wasn't fair
Sometimes it gave a helping hand Sometimes it didn't care
    'Coz when we were together
You made the dream come true
If I had only one friend left
I'd want it to be you

    Someone who understands me
    And knows me inside out
    And helps keep me together
    And believes without a doubt
If I could move a mountain
    Someone to tell it to
If I had only one friend left
I'd want it to be you.

    Facilitator:

  6. Closing Prayer
(Holding hands with a lighted vigil candle placed at the center)
This will be a shared prayer to Blessed Pedro.

    Facilitator:

Blessed Pedro is here with us this very moment, what would you like to tell him?

    All:
    Our Father...
    Hail Mary...
    Glory Be...
Sa ngalan sa Amahan, sa Anak, ug sa Espiritu Santo, Amen.
